Behind every safe driver, there is a woman. The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) believes so, and is felicitating the wives of 150 drivers who have had an accident-free record for over two decades.
MSRTC officials said over 90% of these 150 drivers owed their success to the support of their wives. "Drivers credit their alertness to their family members, especially their wives," said MSRTC vice-chairman and MD Deepak Kapoor. He also credits better road conditions, strict RTO vigil as well as traffic norms for the improved statistics.
Figures since 2005 show that though the length of roads covered by MSRTC buses has increased, the number of accidents has gone down. Mishaps ranged between 3,250 and 3,450 per year in the 2006-2008 period. The figure came down to 3,204 in 2010. "Even the number of fatalities has come down to 458 in 2010 from 517 in 2006," said Kapoor.
