A 24-year-old woman, embroiled in a domestic spat with her husband for not allowing her to take up a job, took out her frustration on her three-year-old son by fatally slashing his neck on Monday. 

The murder took place at her Ghansoli home in Sector 4 when her son returned from a local pre-school. The accused, Varsha Ghodke, dragged her son, Saurabh, to the bathroom and brutally slashed his neck with a knife. She also inflicted two knife injuries on her own face and wrist. She was rushed to the municipal hospital in Vashi, where she is currently admitted. 

Assistant commissioner of police (Vashi ) Mujeeb Shaikh said: "Though the accused looks visibly normal, she may be mentally and psychological disturbed." 

He added that the infant's neck was so badly cut that barely two inches of skin was holding his head to the torso. Investigators further said that Varsha was married to a BEST bus driver, Shashikant Ghodke, in 2004. She was earlier working at a mall in Mumbai where she reportedly had an extramarital affair with someone else. Her husband then decided to shift Varsha back to her mother's house at Shri Swami Samarth Chawl in Ghansoli, and also did not allow her to work. 

"Unable to take these restrictions, the accused even ran away from her Ghansoli house earlier this year. She later returned on her own without offering any explanations," said ACP Shaikh. 

The police believe that the accused must have been severely distressed with her failing marriage and lack of job, leading to this shocking murder. Her mother had also reportedly asked her not to work, which seemed to have angered her further.
