£220,000 to surname
Where there's a will, there's a way. Yes, bizarre it may seem, but a British man is said to have left nearly 220,000 pounds in his will to towns across the world which share his surname.
Solicitors acting for Eric Gordon Douglas sent a cheque for 10,887 pounds to Douglas Borough Council on the Isle of Man as part of the bequest. It has appealed for more information on Douglas from Edinburgh.
Council leader David Christian said: "There were 20 places across the globe with his name. We know nothing about the gentleman and it'd be nice to recognise him. Unfortunately the will doesn't stipulate what we should spend it on.
"But we will definitely put it to good use. A nice quiet area in his memory would be a good idea."
Colleague David Ashford was quoted by British tabloid the 'Daily Express' as saying: "We do get bequests but it is rare for someone who has not got an association with the area to leave something."
