'Saving Private Ryan' voted no1 war film

LONDON: Steven Spielberg's multiple Oscar winning film 'Saving Private Ryan´ has been named the best war film of all time in a poll of movie
fans.
Saving Private Ryan´, a 1998 film starring Hollywood stars Tom Hanks and Matt Damon, garnered 21% of the vote, Telegraph online reported.
The survey was conducted by online DVD and games rental service Lovefilm on more than 3,000 of its members, to mark the cinema release of Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglourious Basterds´.
'The Great Escape´, featuring Steve McQueen as the Cooler King, took 11% of the vote. It pipped another Spielberg-directed film, 'Schindler's List´ to second spot.
Francis Ford Coppola's 'Apocalypse Now´, set in Vietnam but based on Josef Conrad's novel Heart of Darkness, came fourth with nine per cent of the votes.
The Vietnam War was also the backdrop for Stanley Kubrick's 'Full Metal Jacket´ and Oliver Stone's 'Platoon´, which came fifth and sixth respectively, as well as Michael Cimino's 'The Deer Hunter´ which grabbed the tenth position.
'Braveheart´, starring Hollywood superstar Mel Gibson as the Scottish hero William Wallace, claimed seventh spot while modern day war movie 'Black Hawk Down´ came eighth.
Wolfgang Peterson's German U-Boat drama 'Das Boot´ was the only non English language film to make it in to the list on the ninth spot.
