Finland plans to provide fast internet access to all homes and offices by
July.

The ministry of transport and communications says telecom operators must be able to provide "every residence and business office with access to a reasonably priced and high-quality connection'' with a minimum speed of 1 megabit per second.

The ministry said on Friday that its plan brings forward the starting date for the service from December 2010, as the government had proposed last year.

The proposal requires the parliamentary approval. Lawmakers are expected to vote on it later this year.

The project aims to have a distance of no more than 2km from each user to the nearest fibre-optic or cable network. The government will contribute financing to help take the universal service to the remotest areas of the country.
