Think Solar, think Sling. Elevating bags from fashion accessories to a lifestyle statement are solar-powered bags. Making a debut in the country on World Environment Day, these bags are 85% upcycled, made from waste rubber tyres and can be used to charge mobile phones and iPads on the go.
    The bags are fitted with a 6-watt solar panel and a 5,500 mAh battery which charges when exposed to sunlight. "The design is ergonomic and very convenient to use. One hour of direct sunlight is enough to charge a mobile phone for one hour talk time," said Suren Vikash, the brain behind the bag.
    ''By looking at different ways to manage waste at source and by understanding how the existing system works, we understood how intervention at various points with small changes would result in big differences. We decided to make useful products from waste by providing value to otherwise discarded material. We use waste as rich raw material to innovate. This not only utilizes the waste material and increases their life span but also reduces further exploitation of natural resources," Suren explained.
Solar power-packed bag The solar bags come in two categories: solar slings and backpacks and priced between Rs 3,000 and Rs 6,000. "By upcycling waste, we reduce waste reaching landfills and dumpyards. Waste in dumpyard poisons the land, water bodies connected to it, and environment around us. When a customer buys our product, rather than a new product that uses fresh natural resources, they reduce new resources being used up," Suren said. Thunk is a start-up company, established in 2009.
