3D-printed plastic skull

 
A 22-year-old Dutch woman who suffers from a condition in which the skull is getting thicker, has a completely new skull. The plastic brain was implanted during a 23-hour operation at UMC Utrecht. It is a world first, let the hospital know today.

  Earlier in the UMC Utrecht and in hospitals around the world sharing a skull replaced. When swelling of the brains, e.g. after an accident, is often then a portion of the skull removed to reduce the pressure. Later that is part of an implant replaced. But never before has a complete skull replaced. "From forehead to occiput of the left to the right ear," explained the surgeon.
The operation was carried out three months ago, but the UMC Utrecht came today just outside. "Everything went well, we know now," said Verweij. "The woman has her eyesight back again is asymptomatic and is back to work. The operation is really nothing more to see. " Her identity is hospitalized for privacy reasons unknown.
