According to court records, the girl H.H. ran away from her home in Abu Dhabi last April to meet her Pakistani boyfriend A.J., 38, in Dubai after they decided to get married. H.H. ran away on April 11 after her brother dropped her at her university in the capital.
H.H. and A.J. were arrested on May 20 at Bafaria Hotel, where they were living together as a couple for about 40 days.
H.H.'s lawyer told the court his client suffers from epilepsy and is not aware of her actions once she has a seizure. That statement contradicted two medical reports issued by a Dubai hospital and the Khalifa Hospital in Abu Dhabi, which found the lawyer's claim to be inaccurate.
Both defendants said they met online four years ago and fell in love with each other. "We used to meet in shopping malls in Dubai," H.H. told investigators.
A.J. is a trader and was based in Karama, Dubai. He said H.H. met him at the hotel because she knew her family would not accept him if he asked her hand in marriage since he is a Pakistani and she an Emirati. A.H., the girl's brother, told police that he dropped her at her university on April 11 expecting her return around 4pm, but he discovered that she had taken her passport with her.
The medical reports showed that H.H. is under the care of a neurology clinic since December 4, 2008. The last time she received a check-up was in November 2009. The report stated that she suffers from a controlled epilepsy, which leads to partial seizure and without any loss of awareness.
The court bailed H.H. while A.J. remained in prison to prevent him from escaping. The next hearing is on November 3.
